I learned how to ski when I was 14 but really got into it in college…

Let me tell you, you should do it too!!

Skiing is just awesome…when I meet people who are interested in skiing but haven’t tried it, I try my hardest to convince them to give it a shot. It can be intimidating (especially as an adult) to try something like this but believe me you will be happy you did!

I have created a list of the 10 reasons why you should pick up skiing as your new winter hobby.

Here they are!

The 10 Reasons Why You Should Learn How to Ski

#1: Skiing is a great workout!

Skiing uses muscles in your body that you probably didnโ€™t even know you had.

After your first day of skiing, you will most likely feel a little sore. As you go more often, your body will become much more used to it!

As you get more comfortable on the mountain, you can really push yourself, making your workout even better and better. Follow behind a friend who is more advanced than you and try to keep up with them.

Take a few runs down a glade trail or hit the moguls. Those kinds of runs will really get your body working!

Check out this article on why skiing is a ridiculously good workout.

#2: Skiing is definitely one of the most fun winter sports (if not the most fun)

 Skiing is so. much. fun.

Even if you are not very good at starting off, you can generally pick it up pretty quickly!

Once you get comfortable on the mountain you will see what all the hype is aboutโ€ฆBeautiful winter days spent outside having the time of your life skiing down huge mountains!

When you really think about the concept of skiing itโ€™s pretty amazing what you are actually doing!

#3: The sightsโ€ฆbeing up in the mountains in the middle of winter is a magical place

Your first time on a chairlift heading up to the summit, you will see views like never before.

The snow covered mountains are a special sight. Itโ€™s a very different view when you are actually up on the mountain compared to being at the base.

Once you arrive at a peak, when you first turn around off the chairlift you will see the mountains from a totally new point of view that is just unrealโ€ฆOnce you are up there you’ll see what I mean! The tall trees with beautifully groomed trails weaving down the mountain with more mountain ranges off in the distance.

If you get lucky enough to be at the mountain on a sunny, bluebird day after a fresh snowfall, just know you have hit the jackpot of ski days!

#4: Skiing with friends

You will build a connection with your ski buddies that is different from any other friendships you have. There is just something so special about the trust, fun and experiences you have with these people on the mountain.

There will be runs you have with your friends skiing that are just unexplainableโ€ฆwoohooing down the mountain with excitement. Looking at one another after making it back down to a chair lift with the stoke levels so high!!

Itโ€™s an unexplainable, amazing feeling. You both/all know how much fun that run just was and feel a connection that you have never felt before!

There is a trust you gain in your ski buddies to have incase anything ever happened, they are there for you. You have the best conversations with your ski friends on the drive up and back to the mountain.

Skiing with your friends is the best.

#5: Skiing helps your body stay healthy as you get older

The popular saying – โ€œa body in motion stays in motion, a body at rest stays at restโ€ is very true.

No matter the age you are now getting into skiing, just know this is going to benefit you for the long run if you stick with it.

Over the years, I have met dozens of older folks (in their 80s and some in their 90s) on chairlift rides to the summit at various mountains. They are SO inspiring. I love when they sit next to me, tell me their age and how happy they are to still be doing this awesome sport. While on the lift, I like to ask them how they stay so healthy and the answer consistently is, “donโ€™t ever stop doing things like skiing, it keeps the body moving and everything working”.

Skiing can be your winter hobby that helps you live a long healthy life.

#6: The adrenaline- the natural high you feel

This feeling is a hard one to explain. Itโ€™s the #1 factor that has me very addicted to this sport.

Your first few times at the mountain, you might not feel this as you are learning but oh once you doโ€ฆyou will know it!!

Let me paint this picture for you:

Itโ€™s a beautiful winter Tuesday morning, the mountain is quiet. You have gotten a few runs in, the snow is good! Now, you are headed back up to a trail at the summit that youโ€™ve hit already today, you know itโ€™s in great condition. After pressing play on your music, you and your ski buddy get started skiing down the mountain. You get going, fast! Nobody is in your way, you have the entire trail to yourself. Your skis are carving into the snow perfectly!

The snow is pushing off each ski just so nicely. Your turns feel unreal, motivating you to push harder and harder. At this point you are literally flying down the mountain with all the confidence in the world while listening to the perfect song, woohooing your entire way down. Awesome turns and hills that feel so good! You get towards the bottom, slow down in speed until you arrive back in line to get on the chairlift again. You look at your ski buddy and they have that same look in their eyesโ€ฆโ€œOh my god that was unreal!!โ€, โ€œLetโ€™s do it again!!โ€.

That feeling you have while skiing down an amazing run like I just described is something you cant just get with anything…

This is a huge reason I try to get friends of mine who donโ€™t ski to try it outโ€ฆIf I know they love adventure and the outdoors, they will love this, and so will you!

#7: Ski beers

A fun part of the ski day is taking a break at the mountain-side lodge, warming up and enjoying a beer with your friends.

Itโ€™s all a part of the ski culture. No matter what day of the week it is, whatever time of the day, nobody on the mountain will judge you.

I love to check out lodges whenever I go to a mountain, they are fun with great vibes. If you arenโ€™t interested in stopping in a lodge, just bring a beer or two and throw them in your pockets. If itโ€™s a nice day, enjoy them on the chairlift!

#8: The memories you make on the mountain

Some of my favorite memories I have are from days spent on the mountain skiing.

I love recalling specific days with incidents that made us laugh so hard, runs that were just unreal, the first time hitting a glade trail, getting a little too tipsy in a lodge at the end of the day, etc.

There are dozens of amazing times I had with friends on the mountain that I often think back on. I like to reminisce on my early ski days when I was just learning, even some of those days are my best memories.

I know each winter I will gain more memories on the mountains with great friends, itโ€™s one of my favorite parts about the sport.

#9: A fairly easy skill to learn as an adult (much easier than snowboarding)

All you need to be is just a little bit athletic, and you can ski.

Itโ€™s a bit awkward for the first part of the day, but I promise it doesnโ€™t take long to get the hang of!

I HIGHLY recommend getting a lesson on your first ski day. It’s so worth it! Your friends might offer to teach you which is very nice, but donโ€™t let them. Just get a lesson, you will be happy you did and you will actually end up feeling confident skiing by the end of the day!

Skiing is something you can do! Donโ€™t be intimidated, you donโ€™t have to do any crazy trails to start off. You will learn how to turn, slow down, stop and so much more.

Snowboarding is super cool but is a little more difficult to get the hang of, after one day of lessons you probably wonโ€™t be ready to go like you can be with skiing.

#10: The perfect outdoor winter hobby

Do you find yourself unsure what to do on snowy, winter days when you have nothing to do? Well skiing is the answer!

Spend those days at the slopes with awesome friends, enjoy mountain side beers, get some great runs in as well as a really good workout. Skiing is the perfect winter hobby to pick up, especially if you live within driving distance to the mountainsโ€ฆtake advantage of that!

A ski day never feels like a wasted day. Itโ€™s so fulfilling, fun and enjoyable.
