The Best Mykonos, Greece Summer Travel Guide

Little Venice on the Island of Mykonos

The locals and visitors alike on the island of Mykonos are some of the nicest and friendliest people you’ll ever meet. As a young woman, I felt incredibly safe and welcomed on this island.

While Mykonos is often known as the ultimate party destination among the Greek Islands, it’s really a place that can cater to any type of traveler.

Whether you’re looking to dance the night away at some of the most fun bars and clubs you’ve ever been to, or seek out the remote and peaceful corners of the island, Mykonos truly has it all.

With its stunning beauty, rich culture, and endless possibilities for fun and adventure, Mykonos is a truly unique destination that should be on everyone’s travel list.

Getting there

When it comes to traveling to Mykonos, it’s important to note that you can’t fly directly into the island itself. Instead, you’ll need to fly into Athens Airport and then take either an island hopper plane or ferry over to Mykonos.

If you’re looking for the fastest and most convenient option, I highly recommend taking the island hopper plane, it will cost you around $100.00 USD for the ticket.

To ensure a smooth transition from the airport to your hotel or rental, I recommend setting up a car ahead of time to pick you up with all of your luggage when your plane lands. Many hotels and Airbnbs offer this service, but if not, you can always take a taxi.

By taking these simple steps, you can make the most out of your Mykonos adventure without any unnecessary stress or hassle.

Rent a vehicle

One thing you definitely don’t want to miss out on when visiting Mykonos is exploring all that the island has to offer. And the best way to do that? Renting some sort of vehicle!

You’ll see all kinds of fun and open-style vehicles on the roads of Mykonos, including cars, motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, four-wheelers, and even jeeps. With so much ground to cover, having your own wheels is an absolute must.

During my stay on the island, my cousin and I opted to rent a four-wheeler from MΓΌnchen Mykonos for four days. For roughly $265.00 Euros, we got a great deal that included helmets for both of us, as well as a handy little box with a lock on the back.

If you’re interested in renting from MΓΌnchen Mykonos, be sure to ask for Evgenia Asimomiti – she’s fantastic! And don’t worry if you haven’t arranged a rental ahead of time; they have plenty of options available on-site.

Just keep in mind that most places on the island require you to have an international driver’s license to rent a vehicle, so be sure to take care of that before you go. With a safe and easy-to-navigate road system, exploring Mykonos on your own terms is an absolute must.

Where to stay

When it comes to finding the perfect place to stay in Mykonos, you really can’t go wrong. No matter where you choose to lay your head, you’ll be surrounded by stunning views, clean spaces, and a truly beautiful atmosphere.

From budget-friendly options to high-end luxury resorts, there’s a wide range of accommodations to suit every type of traveler. For example, you might opt to stay up high on the mountain, where you can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing retreat with breathtaking ocean views. Or, you might prefer to stay right in the heart of town, where you’ll be immersed in the local culture and within walking distance of everything you need.

If you’re looking to stay in Mykonos Town (Chora), I highly recommend checking out Bluetopia Suites or Mykonos Town Suites – both are fantastic options that offer great value for the price. Alternatively, if you’re looking to be a bit further out of town by the beach, Mykonos Beach Hotel is a great choice.

And don’t forget about Airbnb + VRBO– there are so many incredible properties available on the platform, so be sure to spend some time browsing before making your final decision.

Just keep in mind that Mykonos is a popular destination during the summer months, so it’s always best to book your rental or hotel as far in advance as possible to ensure you get the best options available.

Exploring Mykonos town on foot is a must-do activity! The town is pedestrian-only, so you’ll need to park any vehicles you have at the lot just before the entrance.

Once you’re in town, you’ll find a bustling atmosphere with a variety of high-end shops, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Take your time to wander the narrow streets and alleys, admiring the picturesque white buildings with blue accents.

Beach day

The beaches in Mykonos are truly breathtaking. With so many beaches to choose from, you will want to spend time at all of them!

One great option is Paralia Megali Ammos, which is conveniently located within walking distance from town. The crystal-clear, blue water is perfect for swimming and cooling off from the hot sun. This beach was never crowded when we visited, so it was a peaceful place to relax.

A memory that sticks out from our time at this beach was the sweet little old man who walked around selling the biggest, most delicious donuts we had ever seen!

Search for seashells, stones & sea pottery

Mykonos is a treasure trove of unique and stunning sea pottery. The colors of stones, seashells, and sea pottery are simply unparalleled. The way they are tumbled and shaped by the waves is truly remarkable.

One of my favorite spots to find sea pottery was near the shore where the waves were breaking. The crystal clear water allowed me to easily spot the pieces as I walked along the shore. If you’re a fan of beachcombing or collecting souvenirs, be sure to save some room in your suitcase for these incredible finds!

Visit the Armenistis Lighthouse

One place you won’t want to miss on your trip to Mykonos is the Armenistis Lighthouse. It’s a breathtaking sight that’s definitely worth the trip! We were so enamored by it that we visited twice, once during the day and once before sunset. Even if you visit at any other time of day, it’s sure to be a magnificent view.

Despite its beauty, the lighthouse isn’t typically crowded or busy. If you rent your own vehicle, you can easily get there by taking the road from Agios Stefanos – you’ll see it in the distance. For those who don’t have their own vehicle, there are tours available that take you straight to the lighthouse. Once you’re there, be sure to take some time to walk around and on the lighthouse and capture some photos of the stunning scenery!
