Everything You Need for Iceland in January

Here is Everything You Need for Iceland in January! Iceland in January is a great time of the year to visit. You will have an amazing time exploring the beautiful Nordic Island. The weather in January is often cold and unpredictable. It can go from snowing to raining then to powerful winds. You want to be prepared!

Back in January I spent five days with some friends adventuring all over Iceland! We had an amazing trip.

After spending those five days exploring, I realized what was helpful to have and what I had wished I brought with me. Check out my January in Iceland Packing List! –

Everything You Need for Iceland in January:

I used a full size suitcase to pack all of my clothes, shoes, etc. in. I also brought a backpack for my carry-on and then a small purse for my personal items.

Having the full size suitcase to fit the bulky winter clothes in was nice, I recommend doing that.

The backpack is nice to have for the day-trip excursions and the purse as well, especially when in town.

Clothes:

Layers, layers, layers! Bundle up for your outdoor excursions in Iceland. Being warm and dry makes your experiences much more enjoyable. For the outer layers, like hats and mittens I recommend bring multiples of each incase they get wet.

  • Parka jacket – down-material + waterproof
  • Down vest
  • Fleece coat
  • Thermal leggings
  • Thermal long sleeve
  • Log sleeves
  • Jeans
  • Sweaters
  • Waffle shirts
  • Pjs
  • Sweatpants
  • Sweatshirt
  • Raincoat
  • Wool socks
  • Regular socks
  • Bras
  • Sports bras
  • Bathing suit
  • Underwear
  • Liner gloves
  • Mittens

Shoes:

Waterproof! Your feet will get wet of you don’t wear waterproof shoes. Boots are what you want to wear everywhere, having a couple pairs is nice if you can fit them. I regrettably brought a pair of Uggs…they were comfy and cute but were always wet by the end of the day, all the way through to my socks.

  • Winter boots – I brought Sorels and they kept my feet dry and warm, make sure they are waterproof.
  • Hiking boots – I love my Danner hiking boots.
  • Slippers (for the hotel) – I love my cozy Tevas to warm up in after a day of being on my feet exploring.

Electronics:

If you like photography, bring your cameras!!

  • DSLR camera
  • 35mm film camera
  • GoPro
  • Cellphone
  • Camera + phone chargers
  • Portable chargers
  • Extras memory cards
  • Headphones

Toiletries:

You really only need the basics! I brought all travel size stuff and had plenty for five days.

  • Shampoo

  • Razor

  • Deodorant
  • Toothbrush

Food:

The three of us each packed a little pile of dry food/snacks into each of our suitcases. We were thankful we did, it saved us a lot of money!

  • Granola bars
  • Almonds
  • Fruit snacks
  • Dry fruit
  • Mac n cheese
  • Ramen noodles
  • Oatmeal
  • Chocolate

Miscellaneous:

All the extra things that are important!

  • Drivers license
  • Passport
  • Creditcards
  • Cash
  • Insurance card
  • Wallet
