How to Visit Acadia National Park in the Summer

Here is your summer guide to Acadia National Park! The perfect guide for anyone planning a trip to this amazing destination in northern Maine.

As an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, Acadia offers a wide range of activities, including hiking, beach-going, forest exploration, biking, climbing, and camping. The opportunities for adventure here are truly endless, and the natural beauty of the park is incredible!

I’ve gone on a handful of trips to Acadia in the summer months. We’ve explored a lot of it, and the guide I’ve created has got you covered with all the info you need to make the most of your trip!

Let’s get into all things Acadia!

How to Visit Acadia National Park in the Summer

How to get to Acadia National Park

If you’re planning a trip to Acadia National Park, I highly recommend that you bring your own vehicle for getting around and to transport any hiking/camping equipment.

For those traveling from far away, the best option is to fly into Portland International Jetport in Maine and rent a car to reach your destination. If you’re able to drive, simply enter your destination – such as Mount Desert Campground – into your GPS and hit the road!

Thankfully, the drive to Acadia is relatively easy from any direction, especially during the summer months. As you make your way towards the park, you’ll be treated to stunning coastal views that are truly worth the trip. And about an hour outside of Acadia, the scenery becomes even more breathtaking with plenty of sights to see along the way.

Visit Acadia National Park in the summer

Summer is undeniably the best time to experience the beauty of Acadia National Park!

With lush trees and warm, sunny weather, it’s the perfect season to enjoy the ocean and all the outdoor activities the park has to offer. Although the summer months can get busy in Acadia, there are ways to avoid the crowds. Visiting on weekdays and starting your days early in the morning are great ways to beat the crowds and make the most of your time.

While Northern Maine can be quite chilly in the winter, the summer temperatures are ideal! You can expect mostly sunny days in Acadia and the surrounding areas during this time of year. Of course, there may be occasional overcast days, but don’t let that discourage you – New England weather is known for its rapid changes, and you might find the clouds clearing up before long!

Where to stay when visiting Acadia National Park

Camping near Acadia:

Mount Desert Campground
This is hands-down my favorite campground near Acadia!! The location is unbeatable and the views are next-level. The campsites are set along Somes Sound, offering peaceful water views and a quiet atmosphere.

If you can, try to book a site right on the water (I stayed at C9 and it was amazing — direct water access and gorgeous views). Even if you’re not waterfront, there’s a large shared dock area open to all campers.
The campground is super well-kept, with amenities like picnic tables, fire pits, shared water spigots, bathrooms with showers, and even WiFi hangout zones. Just keep in mind: it’s popular, so book early!

Hadley’s Point Campground
This is another great option if you’re looking to stay close to Acadia! The campground has newly renovated bathrooms and showers, which are super clean and a big plus after a day of hiking. The sites are spacious, well-maintained, and tucked into a quiet setting that still feels close to everything. You’re just a quick drive — or even a short walk — to Hadley’s Point Beach, and the location makes it really easy to get into the park or downtown Bar Harbor. It’s a super convenient and comfortable base for exploring the area!

Smuggler’s Den Campground
If you want to be closer to Southwest Harbor and the quieter side of Mount Desert Island, Smuggler’s Den is a great pick! It offers a mix of wooded and open sites, all super clean and well-kept. The location is ideal for exploring the less crowded side of the island, and you really can’t go wrong staying here.

Airbnb & Rentals

Not into camping? There are tons of cozy Airbnb rentals in the area, most of them being charming cabins or cabin-style homes tucked into the woods.

We recently stayed at a spot in Trenton, just a short drive from the park, and it was perfect for a quiet, relaxing getaway outside the busier parts of the island — and it was right on the water! We swam, paddleboarded, had campfires, cooked meals together, and overall just loved this spot. There were five of us and we fit comfortably — the house was spotless and had everything we needed for a fun, laid-back stay. Here’s the Airbnb we stayed at — highly recommend it!

You’ll also find plenty of inns and hotels scattered throughout Mount Desert Island if that’s more your vibe.

Things to do in Acadia National Park

Hike in Acadia National Park

Hiking in Acadia National Park is an absolute must-do activity during your trip! With a wide range of trails available, you are sure to find something suitable for your skill level and preferences.

One of the most iconic hikes in Acadia is the Beehive Trail, which is perfect for those who want a moderate challenge with breathtaking views. This 2-mile trail takes around an hour to complete and offers stunning panoramic views of Sand Beach and the surrounding areas from the summit. Though I would not recommend if you have a fear of heights, here are some challenging sections where you will need to climb up rock faces using iron bars and walk along narrow bridge.

But don’t let that discourage you! The Beehive Trail is a great hike that offers adventure and an exciting challenge. Just make sure you are prepared and aware of the trail’s difficulty before you start.

Watch the sunrise on Cadillac Mountain

Cadillac Mountain, the highest peak in Acadia National Park, is an absolute must-visit. You have the option to hike up or drive up to the top. The best time to go is at sunrise. Witness the spectacular sight of the first place the sun rises in the United States, right from the top of Cadillac Mountain!

Be sure to check the weather the night before to ensure that it’s clear and plan accordingly for the sunrise time. It can get crowded, so make sure to get there early enough to secure a good spot and find parking.

The views from the top are truly breathtaking. The vibrant colors of the sunrise and the surrounding landscape make it a sight you won’t forget. Even though it may be tough getting up that early, you won’t regret it once you witness how beautiful it is!

Heads up if you’re planning to drive up Cadillac Mountain!
You now need a vehicle reservation to access the summit road (especially during sunrise and peak times). It’s part of a system Acadia put in place to manage crowds and protect the area. The permits are super easy to get online, but they do sell out — so I recommend booking in advance if this is on your must-do list! Make your reservation here! If you are hiking or biking up, no reservation is required — just show your park pass.

SUP (stand up paddleboard) Acadia National Park

If you have your own SUPs (stand-up paddleboards), definitely bring them! A lot of the Airbnbs and campgrounds in the area have direct water access — and if not, there are plenty of nearby spots where you can launch. Paddleboarding here is such a fun and peaceful way to explore the coast, especially in the early mornings or at sunset.

Explore Downtown Bar Harbor

If you find yourself with some free time on a rainy day or if you finish hiking earlier than expected, take a short ten-minute drive to downtown Bar Harbor! This charming town has plenty of options for shopping, dining, and lodging.

The downtown area is situated right on the waterfront, complete with a beautiful park called Agamont Park and a small beach. It’s a great spot to grab a bite to eat and enjoy a cold drink before exploring town. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from, offering everything from fresh seafood to craft beer.

Beach day at Sand Beach in Acadia National Park

Spend a relaxing day at Sand Beach, one of the most beautiful spots in Acadia National Park that’s definitely worth a visit!

The beach is spacious, so finding a spot to yourself won’t be a problem. The sand is incredibly soft and the water is a beautiful shade of blue/green that reminds you of the Caribbean. The beach is situated in a cove, surrounded by trees that make it even more picturesque. Keep an eye out for seals swimming in the distance!

The ocean water in Maine can be chilly, even during mid-summer, but it feels refreshing. You might even get lucky and find a sand dollar here at Sand Beach!

Drive Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park

This is a must-do when visiting Acadia National Park!

Take the 27-mile Park Loop Road at least once — but if you can, do it more than that. The drive is absolutely breathtaking, with some of the most beautiful coastal views you’ll ever see. There are tons of places to pull over, hop out, and explore!

Make sure to grab a park map before starting the drive. With so much to see, it helps to know what’s ahead — you can grab one when you purchase your park pass at the entrance.

Bring a camera, take your time, and enjoy the ride! Plan for about 2–3 hours, depending on how many stops you make. There are also plenty of short hikes along the way that lead to awesome viewpoints.

It’s best to do this drive on a clear, sunny day to soak up all the views. I’d recommend starting early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the midday crowds.

Some stops to hit along the way:
Sand Beach
Thunder Hole
Otter Point
Otter Cove
Little Hunters Beach
• End your drive at Seal Harbor Beach

Bass Harbor Headlight Station

Located on the quieter southwest side of Mount Desert Island, this iconic lighthouse is one of the most photographed spots in Acadia — and for good reason. The view from the rocky shoreline is absolutely stunning. It’s a quick walk from the parking lot, but get there early if you’re visiting during golden hour — parking fills up fast!

Little Hunters Beach

It’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it, but definitely worth a stop! This quiet, tucked-away spot features a beautiful cobblestone beach surrounded by cliffs and evergreens. It’s super peaceful and a great place to take a break from the crowds. You’ll need to walk down a short set of stairs to reach the beach — and don’t forget your camera, the smooth stones and crashing waves make for a dreamy coastal scene!

Search for sea glass

Looking for a fun and relaxing activity in downtown Bar Harbor? Try searching for sea glass! Head over to Agamont Park or the Bar Harbor Pier where you’ll find a small rocky beach. Be sure to plan your visit at low tide and you will most likely find an abundance of sea glass!

Take a day trip to Little Cranberry Island

I seriously can’t recommend this enough!
Hop on the Beal & Bunker Mailboat Ferry from Northeast Harbor and head over to this charming island. Be sure to buy your tickets ahead of time to secure your spot — the ride over is beautiful and part of the fun.

Once you’re there, grab lunch, wander around the Island, explore quiet beaches, and take in the laid-back island vibes. Don’t miss a stop at the pottery shop — it’s filled with beautiful, locally made pieces.

This was hands down one of my favorite things we did during our trip!

Visit Northeast Harbor

Spend some time walking around Northeast Harbor — it’s so quaint and fun to explore!
This little town has such a peaceful vibe and is full of cute shops, galleries, and cafés. Be sure to stop at The Salt Market for coffee and local goods, Swallowfield for beautifully curated gifts and art, and pop into a few other small boutiques while you’re there. It’s the perfect place to slow down, wander around, and soak in the charm of coastal Maine.

Visit Thunder Hole in Acadia National Park

Thunder Hole is definitely a must-see attraction in Acadia National Park! Located off Park Loop Road, it’s an easily accessible spot where you can witness a unique natural phenomenon. As waves roll into the naturally carved inlet, they create a loud thundering sound as the water and air collide. It’s a truly one of a kind sight and sound that you won’t forget.

To get the best views and experience, try to visit Thunder Hole 1-2 hours before high tide. You can get up close to the inlet and even feel the spray of the water. Don’t forget your camera!

Have a picnic at Seal Cove

Tucked away on the western side of Mount Desert Island, Seal Cove is quiet, scenic, and far from the crowds. It’s a great place to slow down, enjoy the ocean views, and relax with a packed lunch. Bring a blanket, some snacks, and soak in the calm coastal vibes — you might even spot a few seals or seabirds while you’re there!

Hangout at your campsite/airbnb

Wherever you choose to stay near Acadia, you’re in for some serious peace, relaxation and beauty. The calm atmosphere and respectful fellow visitors make it the perfect spot to unwind and soak in your surroundings.

If you’re lucky enough to have a campsite—or rental—right on the water, you might find it hard to leave your little slice of paradise. Spend your days cooking delicious meals, playing cards, sipping a cold drink, listening to music, reading, or just lounging in a hammock. There’s plenty of space to find your own quiet corner and truly relax, no matter where you’re staying.

Relax by the fire

Relax and unwind by building a cozy campfire! You can easily find firewood for sale throughout town by driving around and spotting little sheds or piles of wood in front of people’s homes with a box to place your payment in. Make sure to stock up so you have plenty of wood for all the campfires you’ll want to have!

Gather around the fire with some music and drinks, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of Acadia. On clear nights, the sky is filled with countless stars due to the limited light pollution in the area, it’s truly amazing.

Where to Eat Near Acadia

Cook at your campsite/Airbnb! Bringing a propane stove along with your campfire setup makes meal prep easier and more fun. Get creative with some camping recipes and enjoy the satisfaction of cooking your own delicious meals after a day of adventure.

If you need to stock up on supplies, there’s a Hannaford grocery store nearby with everything you’ll need.

If you’re in the mood to eat out, Bar Harbor and nearby spots offer plenty of great options:

Whether you’re cooking at your site or grabbing a meal in town, there’s something for every appetite!

Tips for Visiting Acadia National Park

  • Acadia gets very busy in the summer. If you can, plan your travel days for the weekend and explore the park during the week. Weekends can get crazy crowded, especially at popular spots. It’s a lot more enjoyable to be here midweek when things are a bit quieter.
  • Wake up early every day! There’s so much to explore, and getting an early start makes a huge difference. The early bird definitely catches the worm in Acadia — and a parking spot! Hit the beach early, start your hikes early, and do the coastal drive early. You’ll avoid the crowds and have more peaceful experiences.
  • You’re required to have and display a park entrance pass on your vehicle dashboard. A private vehicle pass is $30 and is valid for seven days — it covers everyone in the car (up to 15 people). You can purchase it online ahead of time or at the park entrance. Just make sure it’s clearly displayed at all times while you’re in the park.
  • If you’re planning any excursions or activities, like guided boat tours, kayaking trips, or biking rentals — definitely book them in advance. These sell out quickly during peak season.
  • And if you’re camping: be aware of wildlife. Keep all food stored in your vehicle, tent, or secure container — never leave it out!

Acadia National Park is a remarkable destination, especially for outdoor lovers! The park’s beauty is truly amazing, and there’s no shortage of activities and sights to experience.

Whether you’re an avid hiker, a beach bum, or someone who simply enjoys soaking in nature’s beauty, Acadia has something for everyone.
